Mercedes’ Bonkers Self-Driving Concept Is Roaming SF | WIRED

What’s unclear is whether there’s a human hidden behind those windows, and if not, how the car senses the world around it. It’s free of the spinning LIDAR system used on many self-driving cars, and there are no visible cameras or radars. It’s also missing things like side-view mirrors that are mandated by federal regulations, so our guess is that it’s not a legitimate, government-sanctioned test vehicle, but something closer to a film prop. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Ford Building A 200-Mile EV To Compete With The Chevy Bolt – Gas 2

Standard

Though the Ford Focus Electric has been on the market nearly as long as the Chevy Volt and Nissan LEAF, it hasn’t had nearly as much success. That’s mostly Ford’s fault, as the Blue Oval put almost no marketing muscle behind the Focus Electric, and it always seemed a few steps behind the competitors with things like price cuts.

Yet that could change if a report from Automobile Magazine is true. Ford is supposedly building a 200-mile electric car to compete with the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model III, with a price tag somewhere below $40,000.

An Oculus Rift-Controlled Robot Is Awesome (and Also Adorable)

Standard

Self-described technology enthusiast and programmer Jonas Lauener created IRE, short for Intuitive Rift Explorer, which is like an adorable cross between Wall-E and Johnny Five. Basically, the robot’s head feeds into the Rift’s display and the entire automaton is controlled through a normal video game controller. The robot’s head mimics the head of the wearer and you can poke around the office or your home from the comfort without ever leaving your chair.
