Nissan said in a press statement that it’s now testing the prototype vehicle on roads with actual traffic conditions. Like Tesla Motors’ Model S, Nissan said its self-driving program will start with stage one, or what the company calls “Piloted Drive 1.0” technology that can drive the car safely on the highway. It will launch by end of next year. After stage one, of course, Nissan will put a foot forward with step two, with a car technology that may support multi-lane piloted drive — or self-driving car that can change lane automatically. This will launch by end of 2018.And by 2020, Nissan says its car tech may support real-life urban, self-driving capability that can manage city roads with pedestrians, plus intersections.
